What is Sports Content Promotion/Marketing?

Sports promoters/marketers are brand loyal people who communicate with fans and supporters to promote their team. These professionals also work closely with big name players and companies to find sponsorships for the organization or specific player.

Description of Duties

  • Manage social media sites
  • Visit and select venues
  • Find sponsors for games
  • Create a budget for an estimated attendance

Work Environment

These people are the behind the scenes workers that make sporting events happen. Most professional teams have offices located in there arenas where the marketing/promotion team works out of. Sports content promoters may travel with the professional teams to gain fandom in other cities. Along with professional teams you can find sports content promoters in high schools and colleges.

Education

Earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing (ideally sports marketing) is required to freelance in this field. While in school finding an internship with any sports organization greatly boosts the chance of being hired directly out of college

Experience

  • Marketing experience of any kind  
  • Sports fan or former athlete is highly preferred.

Skills Needed

Communication is the key to content promotion. Sports content promoters specifically need to be able to communicate with fans and know the fans interests concerning the team. They also need to be able to communicate on a professional level with companies they are trying to partner with to receive sponsorships.

Organization is a very important skill to have because content promoters are dealing with so many people and companies at once all for one event. The ability to run multiple social media pages efficiently and effectively.

Salary/Pay

Entry level positions pay between $45,000 to $60,000 per year. Many of the entry positions will be salaried (internships are not included they will be hourly). After ten years in the profession one could earn anywhere between $70,000 to $110,000 per year.

Growth within the Field

The key to growth within this field is the ability to communicate well. When one is able to communicate well, they will be able to play to the interest of the fans. Today social media is the way to do that. Whether it be Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, professionals should be able to cater to their fans on all these platforms. This career is currently growing faster than many others so the time is now!
